LIGINI TOWERS ADAPTIVE REUSE

SUMMER 2022

This project is an adaptive reuse vision for the Ligini Towers, originally an office complex designed in the EUR region of Rome, Italy. The EUR was constructed during Benito Mussolini's time in power as a site for the Olympics to be hosted and was a notable Fascist vision. It was never actualized as conflict from World War II caused the Olympics to be postponed leaving the area to contain government agencies and other civic institutions. The EUR is commonly seen as a gateway or node to Rome from the South. Specifically, this project reimagines the Ligini Towers' site as a social, cultural, economic, and infrastructure node where a primary connection is made to the city center. The EUR Fermi Metro stop now opens up into the site for people to exit into the site creating a connect between the site and the lake south of the site. The landscape slowly terraces as ramps move through the site resembling the imagery of an archeological dig-site mounding and cutting away to curate a multi-volumetric open public space. As a desire to capture mixed-use within the project, the building program includes commercial space, residential towers, office spaces, and public amenities. On-site parking and transferring the location of the bus station to the site reinforces the concept of this site as a transportation node allowing for people to use multiple different means of commuting. The landscape of the space along the EUR lake is transformed created a deeper connection between the two sites.
