SEBASTION COUNTY REGIONAL LIBRARY

FALL 2021

This regional library is located in Greenwood, Arkansas - a town which is rich in history and proud of it. The site resides in the downtown district of the town just west of the Veteran Memorial Park, along the main street, Highway 10. Currently, Highway 10 acts as a primary artery for the town with most traffic traveling east through the town. The considerable size of the lot and its location warrants engagement with all of the site to create outdoor community spaces which enables centralized connections for the town. Additionally, this project serves a marker for the town's history as there is a large veteran population as well as a strong community-wide appreciation for the town's history. Regarding these goals, the overall massing of the project depicts a carving between the two masses in reference to the path of a devastating tornado which leveled a majority of the downtown district of the town in the 1960s. A bridging volume spans across the public space between the two ground-level masses which serves as a representation of the town's mending over time from the damage of the tornado. This second level volume hovers over the lower structures, punching holes into the facade in order to create reading nooks that allow light into the space in moderation. The ground-level facade system slips into the background using regular rhythm to allow for the facade of the second level to become highlight. The structure of the ground-level buildings consist of structural CLT panels and glulam beams with a post-and-beam system. Wrapped by the facade system of the second level, the structure is comprised of a wood truss system.
